In the Land of Plenty has the added dimension that the workers are Mexican immigrants. Most do not speak English, and are undocumented with no means of protecting themselves from exploitation. These workers had little choice but to leave the villages in Mexico that could not offer them a livelihood. In the strawberry fields of Watsonville, California, we meet several gentle but weathered men and women and hear their stories. The facts are disturbing. Their wages are low and their living conditions are poor. They work long hours and often are exposed to toxic chemicals. Most workers have families, but are lacking health insurance and child care. The United Farmworkers Union has tried to organize. Richard Hobbs, Director of Immigrant Programs, points out that these immigrants as a group returned $100 billion more to the economy than they take. Their wages are taxed although they have no benefits. Yet they are looked upon with hostility by the government as well as by private citizens. With lively music and an appreciation of border culture, In the Land of Plenty provides a human portrait of workers at the mercy of a greedy system. 001355105 530__ $$aPreviously released as DVD. 001355105 546__ $$aThis edition in English and Spanish with English subtitles. 001355105 650_0 $$aFarmers$$zMexico. 001355105 650_0 $$aMigrant agricultural laborers$$zCalifornia$$xSocial conditions. 001355105 650_0 $$aMigrant agricultural laborers$$zCalifornia$$xEconomic conditions. 001355105 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001355105 7001_ $$aAparicio, Carlos.$$4drt$$4pro 001355105 7001_ $$aAiken, Susana.$$4drt$$4pro 001355105 7102_ $$aFilmakers Library online.$$4pbl 001355105 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)60783111 001355105 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;2250104 001355105 901__ $$aASP2250104/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c11115$$tbiblio 001355105 905__ $$uadmin 001355105 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1355105$$pGLOBAL_SET 001355105 910__ $$aKF 2014-06-19 001355105 944__ $$a2250104 001355105 945__ $$aThe Whole World$$cChina$$cMalaysia$$cMiddle East 001355105 950__ $$aVAND; FLON; VSTR; VASS; DVDF$$bDIVO; VAST; FLN2$$cDVDF-ST; VSTR-ST; VAST-BF; DIVO-V1; FLON-13; PVST-BF 001355105 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001355105 980__ $$aBIB 001355105 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001355105 983__ $$aOnline
