While the New World used Chinese men to build the railroads, they were not encouraged to increase and multiply here. Under the Willow Tree tells a remarkable tale of courageous women who left their families behind in China, knowing they would never see them again. As girls, they faced the heart-wrenching odyssey of being shipped off to the New World to marry men they had never met. As women, they fought against the many forms of racism, while challenging sexism within their own community. By passing on language, culture, and values to their children, these women helped define what it means to be Chinese in the New World. Beautiful old photographs combine with the recollections of seven women who grew up in Canada in the first part of the twentieth century to produce a testament to the strength, resourcefulness and dignity of their forebears. 001355361 546__ $$aIn English. 001355361 650_0 $$aChinese$$zCanada$$xHistory. 001355361 650_0 $$aWomen immigrants$$zCanada$$xHistory. 001355361 651_0 $$aCanada$$xEmigration and immigration. 001355361 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001355361 7001_ $$aNipp, Dora,$$edirector. 001355361 7001_ $$aWong, Margaret,$$eproducer. 001355361 77608 $$iOriginal version:$$w(OCoLC)905290457 001355361 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLN4;3176862 001355361 901__ $$aASP3176862/fln4$$bVaAlASP$$c90831$$tbiblio 001355361 905__ $$uadmin 001355361 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1355361$$pGLOBAL_SET 001355361 910__ $$aLR 2016-04-08 001355361 941__ $$a1003832147 001355361 944__ $$a3176862 001355361 945__ $$aThe Whole World$$bCanada 001355361 950__ $$aFLON$$aVAND$$aVASS$$aVSTR$$aDVDF$$bFLN4$$bVAST$$cVSTR-ST$$cDVDF-ST$$cFLON-15 001355361 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001355361 980__ $$aBIB 001355361 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001355361 983__ $$aOnline
