While sneaking into hydroplane races on the Columbia River in Kennewick, WA., Will Thomas and Dave Deacy noticed a human skull mired in the mud. It turned out to be one of the oldest and most complete skeletons ever found in North America. James Chatters, the anthropologist who eventually investigated the skeleton, determined that the skull had "Caucasoid" features. The word, "Caucasoid," and the subsequent carbon dating of the bones, which found them to be over 9,000 years old, ignited a firestorm of controversy. These events pitted science against religion and scientists against Native Americans. The scientists demanded the right to study the bones. The Umatilla Tribe believed the bones to be sacred and ancestral. They were adamant that the bones be repatriated to the tribes for reburial. The American government, seemingly caught in the middle due to the fact that the remains were found on Federal land, decided to repatriate the remains to the Tribe. Eight scientists then filed a lawsuit in order to block this repatriation, claiming that more study was needed to determine ownership. The documentary explores with humor and compassion the cultural assumptions and differing opinions among the various groups involved, and attempts to explain why so many have claimed the bones of Kennewick Man. The far-reaching implications for the future of American anthropology, our view of America's ancient past, and the present day relationship between Native and non-native people are addressed. 001355594 521__ $$aFor College; Adult audiences. 001355594 530__ $$aPreviously released as DVD. 001355594 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001355594 586__ $$aAmerican Indian Film Festival, 2001 001355594 586__ $$aCucalorus Festival of Independent Film, 2002 001355594 650_0 $$aCultural property$$xRepatriation$$zUnited States. 001355594 650_0 $$aHuman remains (Archaeology)$$xGovernment policy$$zUnited States. 001355594 650_0 $$aHuman remains (Archaeology)$$zWashington (State) 001355594 650_0 $$aIndians of North America$$xAnthropometry$$zWashington (State) 001355594 650_0 $$aIndians of North America$$xAntiquities$$xGovernment policy. 001355594 650_0 $$aIndians of North America$$zWashington (State)$$xAntiquities. 001355594 650_0 $$aKennewick Man. 001355594 651_0 $$aWashington (State)$$xAntiquities. 001355594 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001355594 7001_ $$aPurcell, Ryan. 001355594 7102_ $$aFilmakers Library, inc. 001355594 7102_ $$aRiverside Films Productions. 001355594 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747798058 001355594 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1649677 001355594 901__ $$aASP1649677/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c25355$$tbiblio 001355594 905__ $$uadmin 001355594 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1355594$$pGLOBAL_SET 001355594 941__ $$a1003831174 001355594 944__ $$a1779491 001355594 945__ $$aThe Whole World$$cChina 001355594 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001355594 980__ $$aBIB 001355594 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001355594 983__ $$aOnline
