In the course of this richly textured treatment of an evolving symbol, twenty-three women speak out, in traditional testimonio format. This unusual "contata" of women s voices representing urban, small-town, and rural communities, is intercut with scenes of daily women's work and celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe in various contexts, including festivities organized by the Comite Guadalupano in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N. Y. Women have been silenced for centuries in Mexico. By focusing on various feminine forms of devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe as Mexican women's "role model," an entire world of consciousness unfolds. It is a resilient, hard-working, often painful, violent world, encompassing women of all ages and from various walks of life. They belong to a wider world of popular devotion, historically both exploited and dismissed as unimportant by ecclesiastical authorities who would keep women in a place where they no longer want to be. The documentary follows an all-women pilgrimage from Queretaro state through several arduous but joyful days as it weaves its way through difficult terrain, harsh weather and congested streets to the Virgin s shrine in Mexico City. The songs of Rosa Martha Zarate, Mexico s "singing nun," sustains this and every woman s pilgrimage. 001355621 521__ $$aFor College; Adult audiences. 001355621 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001355621 650_0 $$aGuadalupe, Our Lady of. 001355621 650_0 $$aWomen$$xReligious life$$zMexico. 001355621 651_0 $$aMexico. 001355621 653_0 $$aReligion 001355621 653_0 $$aWomen's issues 001355621 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001355621 7001_ $$aGleason, Judith. 001355621 7001_ $$aMereghetti, Elisa. 001355621 7102_ $$aColectivo Feminists de Xalapa. 001355621 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747795997 001355621 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1630792 001355621 901__ $$aASP1630792/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c25389$$tbiblio 001355621 905__ $$uadmin 001355621 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1355621$$pGLOBAL_SET 001355621 944__ $$a1784469 001355621 945__ $$aThe Whole World$$cMiddle East 001355621 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001355621 980__ $$aBIB 001355621 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001355621 983__ $$aOnline
