On their first mission to Mars, astronauts will travel to dangerous and uncharted territory some 100 million miles away and will live and work there for two years. In preparation for this groundbreaking journey, leading scientists from many disciplines come together in the Canadian High Arctic to study and plan. Shot in hi-definition on Devon Island in the Canadian Arctic as well as the NASA Ames Research Center in California and the University of New Brunswick, the film focuses on three remarkable scientists. They have become regulars at the Haughton-Mars base camp on Devon Island, designated by NASA as the most Mars-like place on Earth. Every summer, Darlene Lim, Gordon Osinski and Stephen Braham return to Devon to practice their science with dreams of being on that first mission. Darlene searches for life forms buried in the sediment of Arctic lakes to learn about climate change and the limits of life in extreme environments. Gordon maps the geology of the crater, looking for clues of how to find signs of past life on Mars. Stephen designed the first interplanetary communications system that will insure a constant link between astronauts on Mars and their colleagues on Earth. Once there, they may begin to find answers to the age-old question: are we alone in the Universe?.
