The Sunrise Ceremony which marks the passage from adolescence to adulthood for young Apache women, is disappearing under the pressure of cultural assimilation. This documentary focuses on 13-year-old Maureen Nachu, who lives on the Fort Apache Reservation, in Whiteriver, Arizona. It captures the elaborate preparations for the ceremony: the mystical rituals of the Medicine Man who presides over the dance, the spiritual purification rites in the "Sweat Lodge," and the secret midnight appearance of the "Crown Dancers." The Sunrise Dance is a tremendous physical test, lasting three days. It proves that Maureen has the courage and strength of character to take her place in adult society. For Maureen, her family and her community, the dance is a reaffirmation of tribal identity and the celebration of the role of women in Apache society. 001356060 521__ $$aFor High School; College; Adult audiences. 001356060 533__ $$aElectronic reproduction.$$bAlexandria, VA :$$cAlexander Street Press,$$d2011.$$f(VAST - Academic video online).$$nAvailable via World Wide Web. 001356060 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001356060 586__ $$aALA Selected Films for Young Adults, 1996 001356060 586__ $$aAmerican Anthropological Association, 1995 001356060 586__ $$aFestival dei Popoli, Florence, 1994 001356060 586__ $$aMargaret Mead Film Festival, 1994 001356060 650_0 $$aApache Indians$$xRites and ceremonies. 001356060 650_0 $$aChanging Woman Ceremony (Apache rite) 001356060 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001356060 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747798141 001356060 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1649692 001356060 901__ $$aASP1649692/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c25122$$tbiblio 001356060 905__ $$uadmin 001356060 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1356060$$pGLOBAL_SET 001356060 941__ $$a1003832084 001356060 944__ $$a1785014 001356060 945__ $$aThe Whole World 001356060 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001356060 980__ $$aBIB 001356060 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001356060 983__ $$aOnline
