The country elected its first civilian president, it experienced new prosperity, and became increasingly exposed to Western influences. Young Koreans became exposed to the internet and a steady stream of new musical influences. Our Nation is a stunning portrayal of how Korean youth are using punk rock to find their voices in a rapidly changing culture. Through the eyes of two young college age fans, we journey through the underground punk rock scene. The small club "Drug" features bands with names like Crying Nut, No Brain and Weeper, and the all-female band Supermarket. To Americans the flashing lights, stomping bodies, blaring sounds and angry incantations are nothing new. But seeing it in an Asian culture known for restraint raises many questions. Sociology professor Cho Hae Joang provides a socio-historical overview of the youth subcultures in Korea, and the emergence of consumer capitalism with the concomitant economic crisis of the late 90 s. Our Nation gives air to a multiplicity of voices on issues such as the role of the school system in the lives of Korean youth, their relationships with their parents, and indeed the impact of globalization on the culture. 001356129 521__ $$aFor College; Adult audiences. 001356129 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001356129 586__ $$aAssociation for Asian Studies, 2002 001356129 586__ $$aChicago Asian American Showcase, 2002 001356129 586__ $$aNew York Underground Film Festival, 2002 001356129 586__ $$aSeoul Punk Rock Film Festival, 2001 001356129 586__ $$aThe Int'l Fest of Cinema and Technology, 2005 001356129 650_0 $$aPunk culture$$zKorea (South) 001356129 650_0 $$aPunk rock music$$zKorea (South) 001356129 650_0 $$aSubculture$$zKorea (South) 001356129 650_0 $$aYouth$$zKorea (South) 001356129 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001356129 7001_ $$aEpstein, Stephen J.,$$d1962- 001356129 7001_ $$aTangherlini, Timothy R. 001356129 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747798448 001356129 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1650464 001356129 901__ $$aASP1650464/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c25108$$tbiblio 001356129 905__ $$uadmin 001356129 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1356129$$pGLOBAL_SET 001356129 944__ $$a1785094 001356129 945__ $$aThe Whole World 001356129 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001356129 980__ $$aBIB 001356129 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001356129 983__ $$aOnline
