Hundreds of thousands of others have illegally crossed the border to China in search of food. This documentary, filmed in the remote northeast mountains of China, captures the dire circumstances of these refugees, who must subsist furtively in primitive caves, under floorboards and in basements. If caught they will be sent back and put to death. Families have been torn apart. Many North Korean refugees have had to hand their children over to Chinese orphanages where the children will at least get enough to eat and an education. Or they have been forced to give their children up for adoption. The stories are heart-rending. One family had to leave their five year old in an orphanage as he wailed "don t leave me." Orphaned and abandoned children live on the streets where they beg for food. Shadows and Whispers brings us up close to the human beings who become merely statistics on the evening news. With the recent rapprochment between North and South Korea, conditions will hopefully improve. 001356238 521__ $$aFor College; Adult audiences. 001356238 530__ $$aPreviously released as DVD. 001356238 546__ $$aThis edition in English and Korean with English subtitles. 001356238 586__ $$aAssociation for Asian Studies, 2002 001356238 650_0 $$aFamines$$zKorea (North) 001356238 650_0 $$aKoreans$$zChina. 001356238 650_0 $$aRefugees$$zChina. 001356238 650_0 $$aRefugees$$zKorea (North) 001356238 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001356238 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747798911 001356238 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CURV;1652556 001356238 901__ $$aASP1652556/curv$$bVaAlASP$$c7992$$tbiblio 001356238 905__ $$uadmin 001356238 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1356238$$pGLOBAL_SET 001356238 944__ $$a1785217 001356238 945__ $$aNorth America 001356238 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001356238 980__ $$aBIB 001356238 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001356238 983__ $$aOnline
