When Dr. Lehmann fled Nazi Germany to Montreal in 1937, he devoted the next sixty years to finding new and more humane treatments for the mentally ill. One of his dramatic achievements, captured on archival film, was a series of experiments involving intense human contact with his most regressed women patients. They had spent their days smearing feces on the wall, but by the end of the treatment were nicely dressed and participating in activities. But Dr. Lehmann's greatest legacy came with a single pill - Largactil - the first anti-psychotic drug used in North America. By successfully treating patients with this drug, Lehmann introduced the world to the idea that biology plays a role in mental illness. While Untangling the Mind is a record of Lehmann's perseverance and humanity, it is also an important historical record. Extraordinary archival footage of doctors performing electric shock therapy and lobotomies demonstrate how far psychiatric medicine has come. The film takes us to the world's leading brain research center in Washington, D.C. where Lehmann's remarkable work is being taken to the next level. This film will be an indispensable resource for courses in the history of psychiatry. 001356301 521__ $$aFor College; Adult audiences. 001356301 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001356301 586__ $$aBest Documentary, Yorkton Short Film & Video Festival, 2000 001356301 586__ $$aCertificate of Merit, Golden Gate Awards Competition, 2000 001356301 586__ $$aChris Statuette Columbus Film Festival, 2000 001356301 586__ $$aWestern Psychology Association, 2000 001356301 60010 $$aLehmann, Heinz E.$$q(Heinz Edgar),$$d1911- 001356301 650_0 $$aAntipsychotic drugs$$xHistory. 001356301 650_0 $$aChlorpromazine. 001356301 650_0 $$aPsychiatrists$$vBiography. 001356301 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001356301 7001_ $$aMullins, Catherine. 001356301 7102_ $$aGreen Lion Productions Inc. 001356301 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747799138 001356301 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1652637 001356301 901__ $$aASP1652637/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c25481$$tbiblio 001356301 905__ $$uadmin 001356301 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1356301$$pGLOBAL_SET 001356301 944__ $$a1785291 001356301 945__ $$aThe Whole World 001356301 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001356301 980__ $$aBIB 001356301 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001356301 983__ $$aOnline
