Initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice, the measure required male non-citizens from twenty-five predominately Muslim nations to register with the government. Although none were charged with a terrorist-related crime, nearly 14,000 Muslim men were put into deportation proceedings after 83,000 registered. The hardship imposed by this ruling, denounced by the American Civil Liberties Union, can be seen on the lives of the three teenagers profiled. Mohammad, 18, was born in Pakistan, but has lived in the U.S. since the age of seven. A typical American teenager, he faced the possibility of being sent back to a country he scarcely knew. Fortunately, his congressman intervened at the last minute and he was granted permission to stay. Navila,19, from Bangladesh, carries on a futile struggle to save her father who was deported back to the very country from which he had fled. Sixteen-year-old Hagar Youssef, who has dealt with slurs and prejudice because she wears a headscarf, has mobilized groups to combat bias crimes in New York City. She discusses her experiences as well as the ramifications faced by immigrant communities of the Special Registration program. 001356394 521__ $$aFor College; Adult audiences. 001356394 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001356394 586__ $$aBest Director for a Short Documentary, Brooklyn Arts Council Int'l Film Festival, 2005 001356394 586__ $$aBest Documentary, 4th Annual Indian Diaspora Film Festival, N.Y., 2004 001356394 586__ $$aBest Documentary, Indian Film Festival of L.A., 2005 001356394 650_0 $$aChildren of immigrants$$zUnited States. 001356394 650_0 $$aDeportation$$xGovernment policy$$zUnited States. 001356394 650_0 $$aImmigrants$$xCivil rights$$zUnited States. 001356394 650_0 $$aImmigrants$$xGovernment policy$$zUnited States. 001356394 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001356394 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)747799457 001356394 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1655057 001356394 901__ $$aASP1655057/flon$$bVaAlASP$$c25263$$tbiblio 001356394 905__ $$uadmin 001356394 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1356394$$pGLOBAL_SET 001356394 944__ $$a1785405 001356394 945__ $$aThe Whole World 001356394 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001356394 980__ $$aBIB 001356394 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001356394 983__ $$aOnline
