Those Afghans who took refuge in the United States came to treasure the freedom and economic opportunities offered by their new country. Many settled in Fremont, CA, which became the center of a community of 15,000 exiled Afghans. After September 11th, these Afghan-Americans found themselves caught in a cultural crossfire as their adoptive homeland was at war with their native land.As we learn from the film, American citizens reacted with hostility to these "enemy aliens" in their midst. Individual Afghans and businesses were targeted and attacked. Schoolgirls were afraid to be seen on the streets with their heads covered. Ironically, in 1996, most of the Fremont community had rejected the Taliban and a fist fight had broken out when Taliban representatives tried to take over the Fremont mosque with their brand of fundamentalism. With Us or Against Us follows several Afghan-Americans as they struggle to cope with the anti-Afghan sentiments In America, and indeed the world. We meet some compelling characters from all walks of life from them what it means to be an Afghan in America today. 001356395 521__ $$aFor High School; College; Adult audiences. 001356395 530__ $$aPreviously released as DVD. 001356395 546__ $$aThis edition in English. 001356395 586__ $$aMiddle East Studies Association, 2002 001356395 61020 $$aTaliban. 001356395 650_0 $$aAfghan Americans$$vInterviews. 001356395 650_0 $$aAfghan Americans$$xSocial conditions. 001356395 650_0 $$aArab Americans$$xSocial conditions. 001356395 650_0 $$aSeptember 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001$$xPublic opinion. 001356395 650_0 $$aToleration$$zUnited States. 001356395 651_0 $$aAfghanistan$$xPolitics and government$$y2001- 001356395 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xEthnic relations. 001356395 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 001356395 7001_ $$aJobrani, Mariam.$$4drt$$4pro 001356395 7001_ $$aKrauss, Kenneth.$$4drt$$4pro 001356395 7761_ $$cOriginal$$w(OCoLC)794308183 001356395 85640 $$uhttp://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CURV;1655058 001356395 901__ $$aASP1655058/curv$$bVaAlASP$$c7925$$tbiblio 001356395 905__ $$uadmin 001356395 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1356395$$pGLOBAL_SET 001356395 944__ $$a1785406 001356395 945__ $$aThe Whole World$$cChina 001356395 980__ $$aSTREAMING 001356395 980__ $$aBIB 001356395 982__ $$aStreaming Video 001356395 983__ $$aOnline
