Welles kept it with him that day, and just about every day to come; it became a fixture and his signature. Welles became a volunteer with the local fire department in New York. When the Twin Towers fell, Welles's parents had no idea what happened to him. In the unbearable days that followed, they came to accept that he would never come home. But the mystery of his final hours persisted. Eight months after the attacks, however, Welles's mother read a news account from several survivors, badly hurt on the 78th floor of the South Tower, who said they and others had been led to safety by a stranger, carrying a woman on his back, down nearly twenty flights of stairs. After leading them down, the young man turned around. "I'm going back up," was all he said. The survivors didn't know his name, but despite the smoke and panic, one of them remembered a single detail clearly: the man was wearing a red bandanna.--$$cadapted from book jacket. 001358042 60010 $$aCrowther, Welles,$$d1977-2001. 001358042 61020 $$aWorld Trade Center (New York, N.Y. : 1970-2001) 001358042 647_7 $$aSeptember 11 Terrorist Attacks$$d(2001)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01112794 001358042 648_7 $$a2001$$2fast 001358042 650_0 $$aSeptember 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001$$vBiography. 001358042 650_0 $$aVictims of terrorism$$zNew York (State)$$zNew York$$vBiography. 001358042 650_0 $$aHeroes$$zNew York (State)$$zNew York$$vBiography. 001358042 650_0 $$aRescue work$$vBiography. 001358042 650_0 $$aCourage. 001358042 650_0 $$aVolunteer fire fighters. 001358042 650_1 $$aCourage. 001358042 650_7 $$aSeptember 11 Terrorist Attacks (2001)$$2sears 001358042 655_0 $$aBiography. 001358042 655_7 $$aBiographies.$$2lcgft 001358042 852__ $$bgen$$hTH9118.C768$$iR56 2016 001358042 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1358042$$pGLOBAL_SET 001358042 980__ $$aBOOK 001358042 980__ $$aBIB
