Gersonides is recognized by scholars as one of the most innovative Jewish philosophers of the medieval period. His first model of virtue is a response to the seemingly capricious forces of luck through training in endeavor, diligence, and cunning aimed at physical self-preservation. His second model of virtue is altruistic in nature. It is based on the human imitation of God as creator of the laws of the universe for no self-interested benefit, leading humans to imitate God through the virtues of loving-kindness, grace, and beneficence. Both these models are amplified through the institutions of the kingship and the priesthood, which serve to actualize physical preservation and beneficence on a larger scale, amounting to recognition of the political necessity for a division of powers. 001358151 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001358151 60000 $$aLevi ben Gershom,$$d1288-1344$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001358151 650_0 $$aJewish philosophy. 001358151 650_0 $$aPhilosophy, Medieval. 001358151 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001358151 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aGreen, Alexander.$$tVirtue Ethics of Levi Gersonides.$$dCham : Springer International Publishing, ©2016$$z9783319408194 001358151 852__ $$bebk 001358151 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-40820-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001358151 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1358151$$pGLOBAL_SET 001358151 980__ $$aBIB 001358151 980__ $$aEBOOK 001358151 982__ $$aEbook 001358151 983__ $$aOnline 001358151 994__ $$a92$$bISE
