It focuses on the effects of democratization on the mobilization of the poorest as well as on the role played by different types of brokers, from radical Catholic priests to local leaders embedded in political networks. Through a multi-method endeavour that combines ethnography, historical sources, and quantitative time series, the author reconstructs the history of the informal city since the late 1940s to the present. From a social movements/contentious politics perspective, the book challenges the assumption that socioeconomic factors such as poverty were the only causes triggering land squatting. 001358489 650_0 $$aPolitical science. 001358489 650_0 $$aEconomics. 001358489 650_0 $$aElections. 001358489 650_0 $$aSocial structure. 001358489 650_0 $$aEquality. 001358489 650_0 $$aSociology, Urban. 001358489 650_0 $$aEconomic development. 001358489 650_0 $$aSocial change. 001358489 651_0 $$aLatin America$$xPolitics and government. 001358489 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001358489 7102_ $$aSpringer SOAS EBA Politics. 001358489 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783319545332 001358489 830_0 $$aLatin American political economy. 001358489 852__ $$bebk 001358489 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-54534-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001358489 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1358489$$pGLOBAL_SET 001358489 980__ $$aBIB 001358489 980__ $$aEBOOK 001358489 982__ $$aEbook 001358489 983__ $$aOnline 001358489 994__ $$a92$$bISE
