The analysis is guided by theory and explains the emergence, institutional design and performance of SADC's major integration projects in the issue areas of the economy, security and infrastructure. It provides in this way a profound assessment of the organization as a whole. The study shows that South Africa plays a regional key role as driver for integration while external influence of the EU is ambivalent in character because it unfolds a supportive or obstructive impact. The author argues that the EU gains influence over regional integration processes in the SADC on the basis of patterns of asymmetric interdependence and becomes a 'game-changer' insofar as it facilitates or impedes solutions to regional cooperation problems. 001358719 650_0 $$aPolitical science. 001358719 650_0 $$aEuropean Union. 001358719 650_0 $$aRegionalism. 001358719 650_0 $$aPeace. 001358719 650_0 $$aEconomic development. 001358719 651_0 $$aAfrica$$xPolitics and government. 001358719 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001358719 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783319453293 001358719 852__ $$bebk 001358719 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-45330-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001358719 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1358719$$pGLOBAL_SET 001358719 980__ $$aBIB 001358719 980__ $$aEBOOK 001358719 982__ $$aEbook 001358719 983__ $$aOnline 001358719 994__ $$a92$$bISE
