These groups varied greatly in their organisation and teaching, yet in official state records they are routinely portrayed as belonging to the same esoteric tradition, stigmatised under generic labels such as "White Lotus" and "evil teaching", and accused of black magic, sedition and messianic agitation. Wu Junqing convincingly demonstrates that this "heresy construct" was not a reflection of historical reality but a product of the Chinese historiographical tradition, with its uncritical reliance on official sources. The imperial heresy construct remains influential in modern China, where it contributes to shaping policy towards unlicensed religious groups."--$$cProvided by publisher. 001367431 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001367431 650_0 $$aReligion and state$$zChina$$xHistory. 001367431 650_0 $$aCults$$zChina$$xHistory. 001367431 650_0 $$aSects$$zChina$$xHistory. 001367431 650_0 $$aReligion and politics$$zChina$$xHistory. 001367431 651_0 $$aChina$$xReligion$$xHistory. 001367431 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001367431 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aWu, Junqing.$$tMandarins and heretics : the construction of "heresy" in Chinese state discourse.$$dLeiden : Brill, [2017]$$z9789004331396 001367431 830_0 $$aReligion in Chinese societies ;$$vvolume 11. 001367431 852__ $$bebk 001367431 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete $$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=4790860$$zOnline Access 001367431 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1367431$$pGLOBAL_SET 001367431 980__ $$aBIB 001367431 980__ $$aEBOOK 001367431 982__ $$aEbook 001367431 983__ $$aOnline
