It constitutes the first attempt to examine the mendicant phenomenon as a whole rather than focusing on individual orders and friaries. The first three chapters give a chronological overview of the arrival and initial expansion of the friars in the thirteenth century, through the upheavals of the fourteenth century and the emergence of vigorous reform parties within each order in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The second section consists of seven chapters that examine discrete aspects of mendicant lifestyle and ministry. These include analyses of the friars' relationships with their patrons, benefactors and critics. The mendicant lifestyle forms the subject of one chapter, as does the friars' efficacy as preachers, confessors and counsellors. Particular attention is devoted to the educational and formation structures within each order, as well as to devotional and liturgical activities. The art and architecture of the friaries is examined in another chapter. The volume concludes with an epilogue detailing the developments and upheavals in Irish mendicant life during the tumultuous decade between 1530 and 1540."--Cover page [4]. 001372214 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001372214 650_0 $$aFriars$$zIreland$$xHistory$$yTo 1500. 001372214 650_0 $$aFriars$$zIreland$$xHistory$$y16th century. 001372214 651_0 $$aIreland$$xChurch history$$y600-1500. 001372214 651_0 $$aIreland$$xChurch history$$y16th century. 001372214 651_0 $$aIreland$$xReligion. 001372214 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001372214 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aÓ Clabaigh, Colmán N.$$tFriars in Ireland, 1224-1540.$$dDublin, Ireland ; Portland, Oregon : Four Courts Press, c2012 $$z9781846822247 $$w(DLC) 2011279196 001372214 852__ $$bebk 001372214 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete $$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=6261011$$zOnline Access 001372214 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1372214$$pGLOBAL_SET 001372214 980__ $$aBIB 001372214 980__ $$aEBOOK 001372214 982__ $$aEbook 001372214 983__ $$aOnline
