Initially, the Occupation promoted policies of demilitarization and democratization. A new Japanese constitution which pursued pacifism was established. However, as the Cold War intensified, policies switched in the direction of economic recovery, and it was contended that Japan should take the anti-Communist pro-America path. In 1951, at the height of the Korean War, the San Francisco Peace Treaty and the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty were concluded as a fixed set. Winner of the 2015 Yomiuri Yoshino Sakuzo Prize for academic writing on politics, economics, and history, this book provides a wide view of the seven years of the Occupation of Japan which led to the 'postwar system' that has continued into the twenty-first century. --$$cBack cover. 001373619 648_7 $$a1945-1989$$2fast 001373619 651_0 $$aJapan$$xHistory$$yAllied occupation, 1945-1952. 001373619 651_0 $$aJapan$$xPolitics and government$$y1945-1989. 001373619 651_0 $$aJapan$$xForeign relations$$zUnited States. 001373619 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$zJapan. 001373619 7102_ $$aJapanese Institute of International Affairs,$$etranslator. 001373619 7102_ $$aShuppan Bunka Sangyō Shinkō Zaidan,$$epublisher. 001373619 852__ $$bgen$$hDS889.16$$i.F82813 2021 001373619 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1373619$$pGLOBAL_SET 001373619 980__ $$aBOOK 001373619 980__ $$aBIB
