Eisenhower's presidency. In this book, Mara Oliva reconsiders the influence of U.S. public opinion on Sino-American relations, arguing that it is understudied and often misinterpreted. She shows how the Eisenhower administration's hard line policy towards Beijing had been formulated in line with U.S. national security interests, not as a result of public pressure. However, the public did play a significant role in shaping the implementation, timing and political communication of Washington's strategy, ultimately hampering relations with the Communist giant and seriously heightening the risk of nuclear conflict. Drawing together an extensive array of published and unpublished sources, this book offers a new prism for understanding one of the most difficult decades in the history of both countries. 001378217 651_0 $$aChina$$xForeign public opinion. 001378217 651_0 $$aChina$$xForeign relations$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001378217 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$zChina$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001378217 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001378217 77608 $$iPrinted edition:$$z9783319761947$$w(OCoLC)1020605059 001378217 852__ $$bebk 001378217 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-76195-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001378217 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1378217$$pGLOBAL_SET 001378217 980__ $$aBIB 001378217 980__ $$aEBOOK 001378217 982__ $$aEbook 001378217 983__ $$aOnline 001378217 994__ $$a92$$bISE
