As cultural metaphors, theatricality and performativity evoke practices of seeing and doing, but also conflicting values of novelty and normativity. With anthropologist Tim Ingold and philosopher Stephen C. Pepper, this study explores a series of intertwining threads, from the theatrical to the performative: Antitheatrical (Plato, the Baroque, Michael Fried); Pro-theatrical (directors Wagner, Fuchs, Meyerhold, Brecht, and Brook); Dramatic (weaving memory in Shaffer's Amadeus and Beckett's Footfalls); Efficient (from modernist "machines for living in" to the "smart home"); Activist (knit graffiti, clown patrols, and the Anthropo(s)cene). An approach is developed in which 'performativity' names the way we tacitly weave worlds and identities, variously concealed or clarified by the step-aside tactics of 'theatricality'. 001378222 650_0 $$aTheater$$xPhilosophy. 001378222 650_0 $$aPerforming arts$$xPhilosophy. 001378222 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001378222 77608 $$iPrinted edition:$$z9783319732251$$w(OCoLC)1013720694 001378222 830_0 $$aPerformance philosophy. 001378222 852__ $$bebk 001378222 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-73226-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001378222 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1378222$$pGLOBAL_SET 001378222 980__ $$aBIB 001378222 980__ $$aEBOOK 001378222 982__ $$aEbook 001378222 983__ $$aOnline 001378222 994__ $$a92$$bISE
