However productive this culture has been, American society has not approached the realization of Emerson's or Dewey's vision of a highly participatory American cultural democracy. Such a culture requires critics who are read by the average citizen, but the migration of critics and intellectuals from the public to the academy has resulted in fewer efforts to engage with ordinary citizens. The Word on the Street investigates this disjunction between the study of literature in the academy and the interests of the common reader and society at large, arguing the vital importance of publicly engaged scholarship in the humanities. Teres chronicles how the once central function of the humanities professorate--to teach students to appreciate and be inspired by literature--has increasingly been lost to literary and cultural studies in the last thirty years. The Word on the Street argues for a return to an earlier model of the public intellectual and a literary and cultural criticism that is accessible to ordinary citizens. Along the way, Teres offers an account of the current problem and potential solutions, with the goal of prompting a future vision of publicly engaged scholarship that resonates with the common reader and promotes an informed citizenry." --From the back of the book. 001380441 650_0 $$aLiterature$$xStudy and teaching$$zUnited States. 001380441 650_0 $$aLiterature$$xAppreciation$$zUnited States. 001380441 650_0 $$aLiterature$$xHistory and criticism$$xTheory, etc. 001380441 650_0 $$aBooks and reading$$xPhilosophy. 001380441 650_0 $$aLiteracy$$xPhilosophy. 001380441 650_0 $$aLiterature and society. 001380441 650_0 $$aPolitics and literature. 001380441 650_7 $$aLiteraturwissenschaft$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4036034-9 001380441 650_7 $$aLiteraturkritik$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4036020-9 001380441 650_7 $$aÄsthetik$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4000626-8 001380441 650_7 $$aLeserforschung$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4167445-5 001380441 650_7 $$aMassenkultur$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4125858-7 001380441 650_7 $$aLiteracy$$xPhilosophy.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00999879 001380441 650_7 $$aLiterature and society.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01000096 001380441 650_7 $$aLiterature$$xAppreciation.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00999957 001380441 650_7 $$aLiterature$$xStudy and teaching.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01000024 001380441 650_7 $$aLiterature$$xTheory, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01353577 001380441 650_7 $$aPolitics and literature.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01069960 001380441 651_7 $$aUSA$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4078704-7 001380441 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001380441 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001380441 830_0 $$aNew public scholarship. 001380441 852__ $$bgen 001380441 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1380441$$pGLOBAL_SET 001380441 980__ $$aBIB 001380441 980__ $$aBOOK 001380441 994__ $$aC0$$bISE
