It was premised on imaginative depictions in a utopian novel, "Voyage en Icaria" by Etienne Cabet (1840). Women and men were obliged to marry. No dowry was necessary, for the state provided housing, food, material goods, medical care, funded modern research, and lifelong security for all. Like men, women were educated and could become professionals, even doctors or priestesses." "In the novel, the community goals took fifty years to realize. The Icarians who came to America worked towards the book's principled social aims. The first immigration left for America shortly before the February 23, 1848 Revolution. The excited Icarian women, who planned to leave in March, were subsequently addressed as Citoyennes. They joined the French feminists in the drive to be included in universal suffrage but were not. However, the Citoyennes anticipated better conditions in the Icarian colony. This chronicle follows their efforts to have a political vote, which did come in 1879 in one Icarian Branch. Although legal and economic problems led to the final dissolution of the community in 1898, the Citoyennes legacy has survived, and now is carefully documented in Professor Garno's book."--Jacket. 001380461 61027 $$aNauvoo <Ill.> / Icarische Gemeinschaft.$$2swd 001380461 648_7 $$a1800-1899$$2fast 001380461 650_0 $$aIcarian movement$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001380461 650_0 $$aUtopian socialism$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001380461 650_0 $$aIcarian movement$$zIowa$$zAdams County. 001380461 650_0 $$aFeminism$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001380461 650_7 $$aFeminism.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00922671 001380461 650_7 $$aIcarian movement.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00966498 001380461 650_7 $$aUtopian socialism.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01163356 001380461 65007 $$aIkarier <Sozialist>$$2swd 001380461 65007 $$aFrühsozialismus.$$2swd 001380461 651_0 $$aAdams County (Iowa)$$xHistory. 001380461 651_0 $$aIowa$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001380461 651_7 $$aIowa.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01205835 001380461 651_7 $$aIowa$$zAdams County.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01212631 001380461 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001380461 651_7 $$aIowa.$$2swd 001380461 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001380461 77608 $$iOnline version:$$aGarno, Diana M.$$tCitoyennes and Icaria.$$dLanham, MD : University Press of America, ©2005$$w(OCoLC)607571401 001380461 852__ $$bgen 001380461 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1380461$$pGLOBAL_SET 001380461 980__ $$aBIB 001380461 980__ $$aBOOK
