Although religious innovation had a long history in the United States, these contemporary movements gained widespread attention because they attracted a sizable population of middle-class youths and threatened long-held social and religious conventions. This book traces the remarkable journey of one such movement, the Holy Order of MANS, from its beginnings in 1967 as a monastic-style New Age initiatory order to its eventual transformation in 1988 into Christ the Savior Brotherhood, an Eastern Orthodox sect. At the start, the group's beliefs and rites were an eclectic combination of Western esoterism, apocalyptic millennialism, Christian monasticism, New Thought philosophy, and Eastern initiatory practices. Its self-proclaimed mission was to prepare humanity for an imminent "Golden Dawn" of the spirit by making available the "Ancient Christian Mysteries" to modern-day churches. After the death of its founder and in the wake of the anti-cult sentiment that followed the mass suicides at Jonestown, the movement decided to adopt a more conventional Christian image. Over the next decade, the community abandoned its esoteric worldview and language for the traditionalist framework of Eastern Orthodoxy 001380524 5208_ $$aUsing oral interviews, participant observation, and an extensive array of primary sources, Lucas uncovers the beliefs and ritual life of order members and analyzes the processes by which this religious community changed so radically during its founding generation. He illustrates how the cultural dislocations and stresses of contemporary America affected the emergence and growth of a highly innovative religious movement, and assesses the cultural significance of new religious communities as laboratories of social and spiritual change. 001380524 61020 $$aHoly Order of MANS$$xHistory. 001380524 61020 $$aChrist the Savior Brotherhood$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001380524 61020 $$aOrthodox Eastern Church$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001380524 61027 $$aChrist the Savior Brotherhood.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00696915 001380524 61027 $$aHoly Order of MANS.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00520818 001380524 61027 $$aOrthodox Eastern Church.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00510210 001380524 61027 $$aChrist the Savior Brotherhood$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4458878-1 001380524 648_7 $$a1900-1999$$2fast 001380524 650_0 $$aNew Age movement$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001380524 650_7 $$aNew Age movement.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01036696 001380524 650_7 $$aGeschichte$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4020517-4 001380524 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001380524 653_0 $$aChrist the Savior Brotherhood$$aHistory$$a20th century 001380524 653_0 $$aGeschichte 001380524 653_0 $$aHoly Order of MANS$$aHistory 001380524 653_0 $$aNew Age movement$$aUnited States$$aHistory$$a20th century 001380524 653_0 $$aOrthodox Eastern Church$$aUnited States$$aHistory$$a20th century 001380524 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001380524 830_0 $$aReligion in North America. 001380524 852__ $$bgen 001380524 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1380524$$pGLOBAL_SET 001380524 980__ $$aBIB 001380524 980__ $$aBOOK
