It proposes an innovative approach to the Paris Commune, the largest urban uprising in modern European history. For Marx and Lenin the Commune was a brilliant harbinger of proletarian dictatorship; for others, it was merely the last of the nineteenth-century revolutions. The Paradise of Association argues instead that the Commune resulted from revolutionary action by popular clubs and was shaped by the unique political culture fostered within them. The volume combines a detailed social analysis of 733 club militants with a "new cultural history" perspective, examining the language and practices of popular organizations in relation to such topics as historical memory, gender difference, definitions of citizenship, and revolutionary symbolism. 001380650 5208_ $$aThis new perspective on the Commune entails revising several assumptions about the development of socialism and the evolution of party structures and popular movements in the late nineteenth century. It will be of interest to historians, to those interested in the relationship between popular culture and politics, and to researchers and students of gender relations and class dynamics in revolutionary movements. 001380650 647_7 $$aCommune$$c(Paris, France :$$d1871)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01404494 001380650 648_7 $$a1800-1899$$2fast 001380650 650_0 $$aPolitical culture$$zFrance$$zParis$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001380650 650_0 $$aPolitical clubs$$zFrance$$zParis$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001380650 650_7 $$aPolitical clubs.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01069225 001380650 650_7 $$aPolitical culture.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01069263 001380650 65017 $$aPolitieke cultuur.$$2gtt 001380650 65017 $$aArbeidersorganisaties.$$2gtt 001380650 650_7 $$aPolitical clubs$$zFrance$$zParis$$xHistory$$y19th century.$$2nli 001380650 650_7 $$aPolitical culture$$zFrance$$zParis$$xHistory$$y19th century.$$2nli 001380650 651_0 $$aParis (France)$$xHistory$$yCommune, 1871. 001380650 651_7 $$aFrance$$zParis.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01205283 001380650 651_7 $$aParis (France)$$xHistory$$yCommune, 1871.$$2nli 001380650 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001380650 77608 $$iOnline version:$$aJohnson, Martin Phillip, 1959-$$tParadise of association.$$dAnn Arbor : The University of Michigan Press, ©1996$$w(OCoLC)605390146 001380650 77608 $$iOnline version:$$aJohnson, Martin Phillip, 1959-$$tParadise of association.$$dAnn Arbor : The University of Michigan Press, ©1996$$w(OCoLC)606975803 001380650 852__ $$bgen$$hJS5170$$i.J64 1996 001380650 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1380650$$pGLOBAL_SET 001380650 980__ $$aBOOK 001380650 980__ $$aBIB
