The coastal centers grew to considerable size and importance, perhaps owing their prosperity to the fact that the main shipping lanes from wealthy Egypt and Syria lay right along the Lycian coast, with its numerous safe harbors. In late antiquity, a population shift seems to have occurred. The urban populations along the coast appear to have declined, while smaller settlements (monasteries, villages, and towns) began cropping up in the sheltered mountain vales farther up and farther in. To be sure, the coast was not abandoned - indeed, evidence suggests a mutual dependence between the inhabited centers of mountain and plain." 001381250 5208_ $$a"The current study is the result of Martin Harrison's forty years of travel and research in the area that was once Lycia, where the silent ruins of monasteries and churches, towns, villages, and hamlets remain largely inaccessible and unexplored. Also presented are the findings from his excavation of the Phrygian city of Amorium, which became more important as the great classical cities declined and which, at its peak, ranked second only to Byzantium, until it fell to Arab invaders."--Jacket. 001381250 648_7 $$aTo 1500$$2fast 001381250 650_0 $$aRomans$$zTurkey$$zLycia. 001381250 650_0 $$aGreeks$$zTurkey$$zLycia$$xHistory$$yTo 1500. 001381250 650_0 $$aExcavations (Archaeology)$$zTurkey$$zLycia. 001381250 650_0 $$aRomans$$zTurkey$$zPhrygia. 001381250 650_0 $$aGreeks$$zTurkey$$zPhrygia$$xHistory$$yTo 1500. 001381250 650_0 $$aExcavations (Archaeology)$$zTurkey$$zPhrygia. 001381250 650_7 $$aByzantine antiquities.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00843224 001381250 650_7 $$aClassical antiquities.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00863445 001381250 650_7 $$aExcavations (Archaeology)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00917564 001381250 650_7 $$aGreeks.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00947546 001381250 650_7 $$aRomans.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01100116 001381250 65017 $$aLate oudheid.$$2gtt 001381250 65017 $$aByzantijnse tijd.$$2gtt 001381250 650_7 $$aExcavations (Archaeology)$$zTurkey$$zLycia.$$2nli 001381250 650_7 $$aExcavations (Archaeology)$$zTurkey$$zPhrygia.$$2nli 001381250 650_7 $$aByzantine antiquities.$$2nli 001381250 651_0 $$aLycia$$xAntiquities, Roman. 001381250 651_0 $$aLycia$$xAntiquities, Byzantine. 001381250 651_0 $$aPhrygia$$xAntiquities, Roman. 001381250 651_0 $$aPhrygia$$xAntiquities, Byzantine. 001381250 651_7 $$aAsia$$zLycia.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01231045 001381250 651_7 $$aAsia$$zPhrygia.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01248609 001381250 651_7 $$aLycia$$xAntiquities, Roman.$$2nli 001381250 651_7 $$aLycia$$xAntiquities, Byzantine.$$2nli 001381250 651_7 $$aPhrygia$$xAntiquities, Roman.$$2nli 001381250 651_7 $$aPhrygia$$xAntiquities, Byzantine.$$2nli 001381250 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001381250 7001_ $$aYoung, Wendy$$q(Wendy Dennis) 001381250 77608 $$iOnline version:$$aHarrison, R.M.
