The pace and degree of success have varied widely, and there is increasing divergence in performance, structure, and institutions among the transition economies. These differences are largely determined by country-specific conditions and political configurations. This book compares the experiences of the countries involved over the first ten years to determine what has worked and failed, as well as the nature of the challenges that lie ahead. After two overviews of the transition process to date, the book presents eleven specific country cases: the reunification of East and West Germany; the most successful transition countries, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and Slovenia; the less successful experience of countries in the former Soviet Union, namely, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine; and the dissimilar developments in two major Balkan countries, Bulgaria and Romania. The final section summarizes the policy lessons of the different experiences. The contributors, who include ministers, government officials, academics, and leaders of international monetary institutions, stress the need for greater emphasis on institutional building and on the enforcement of contracts. 001385905 588__ $$aOCLC-licensed vendor bibliographic record. 001385905 650_0 $$aPrivatization$$zEurope, Eastern$$vCase studies. 001385905 650_0 $$aPrivatization$$zEurope, Central$$vCase studies. 001385905 650_0 $$aPost-communism$$zEurope, Eastern$$vCase studies. 001385905 650_0 $$aPost-communism$$zEurope, Central$$vCase studies. 001385905 651_0 $$aEurope, Eastern$$xEconomic policy$$y1989-$$vCase studies. 001385905 651_0 $$aEurope, Central$$xEconomic policy$$vCase studies. 001385905 653__ $$aECONOMICS/International Economics 001385905 653__ $$aECONOMICS/Trade & Development 001385905 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001385905 7001_ $$aBléjer, Mario I. 001385905 7001_ $$aSkreb, Marko,$$d1957- 001385905 852__ $$bebk 001385905 85640 $$3MIT Press$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/6904.001.0001?locatt=mode:legacy$$zOnline Access through The MIT Press Direct 001385905 85642 $$3OCLC metadata license agreement$$uhttp://www.oclc.org/content/dam/oclc/forms/terms/vbrl-201703.pdf 001385905 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1385905$$pGLOBAL_SET 001385905 980__ $$aBIB 001385905 980__ $$aEBOOK 001385905 982__ $$aEbook 001385905 983__ $$aOnline
