The death of Aaron Swartz and the more recent controversy around the SciHub and Libgen repositories have drawn attention to the question of access to knowledge, particularly for students facing financial and other constraints. Open access currently provides a very limited answer to this question, which piracy answers more comprehensively. This edited volume explores how access to knowledge has changed in the past twenty years, as student populations have boomed and as educators and publishers navigated the transition from paper to digital materials. It is concerned primarily with the experience of developing countries, where growing numbers of students, rapid development of Internet and device infrastructures, and high relative inequality have produced the sharpest tensions in the publishing and educational ecosystem. 001386638 588__ $$aOCLC-licensed vendor bibliographic record. 001386638 650_0 $$aScholarly publishing$$xEconomic aspects$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aScholarly electronic publishing$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aPiracy (Copyright)$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aIntellectual property infringement$$xEconomic aspects$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aCopyright$$xElectronic information resources$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aPhotocopying$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aOpen access publishing$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aCommunication in learning and scholarship$$xTechnological innovations$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 650_0 $$aEducation, Higher$$zDeveloping countries. 001386638 653__ $$aINFORMATION SCIENCE/Library Science 001386638 653__ $$aINFORMATION SCIENCE/General 001386638 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001386638 7001_ $$aKaraganis, Joe,$$eeditor. 001386638 852__ $$bebk 001386638 85640 $$3MIT Press$$uhttps://doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/11339.001.0001?locatt=mode:legacy$$zOnline Access through The MIT Press Direct 001386638 85642 $$3OCLC metadata license agreement$$uhttp://www.oclc.org/content/dam/oclc/forms/terms/vbrl-201703.pdf 001386638 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1386638$$pGLOBAL_SET 001386638 980__ $$aBIB 001386638 980__ $$aEBOOK 001386638 982__ $$aEbook 001386638 983__ $$aOnline
