Black slaves in the New World created a veritable "literature of escape" depicting the overwhelming horrors of human bondage. These narratives served the abolitionist movement not only as evidence of the slaves' degradation but also of their "intellectual capacity." Accordingly, this literature has elicited a wealth of analysis- and controversy- from its initial publication right up to our day. This volume charts the response to the black slave's narrative from 1750 to the present. The book consists of three sections: selected reviews of slave narratives, dating from 1750 to 1861; essays examining how such narratives serve as historical material; and essays exploring the narratives as literary artifacts. 001388199 650_0 $$aSlaves$$zUnited States$$vBiography. 001388199 650_0 $$aSlaves$$zUnited States$$xSocial conditions. 001388199 650_0 $$aSlavery$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$xSources. 001388199 650_0 $$aAutobiography. 001388199 650_6 $$aEsclaves$$0(CaQQLa)201-0261650$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0261650$$vBiographies.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0378258 001388199 650_6 $$aEsclavage$$0(CaQQLa)201-0027024$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0027024$$xConditions des esclaves. 001388199 650_6 $$aEsclavage$$0(CaQQLa)201-0115854$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0115854$$xHistoire$$0(CaQQLa)201-0115854$$xSources.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0378211 001388199 650_6 $$aAutobiographie.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0002692 001388199 650_7 $$aAutobiography.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00822597 001388199 650_7 $$aSlavery.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01120426 001388199 650_7 $$aSlaves.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01120522 001388199 650_7 $$aSlaves$$xSocial conditions.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01120577 001388199 650_7 $$aAfrican Americans$$xHistory.$$2fssh 001388199 650_7 $$aSlaves$$zUnited States$$xBiography.$$2fssh 001388199 65017 $$aSlaven (arbeid)$$2gtt 001388199 65017 $$aAutobiografieën.$$2gtt 001388199 650_7 $$aSklave$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4055252-4 001388199 650_7 $$aAutobiografische Literatur$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4143683-0 001388199 650_7 $$aRezeption$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4049716-1 001388199 650_7 $$aAutobiografie$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4003939-0 001388199 65007 $$aGeschichte (1750-1985)$$2swd 001388199 651_7 $$aUSA$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4078704-7 001388199 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001388199 651_7 $$aUnited States$$xSlavery and bondage.$$2fssh 001388199 651_7 $$aUSA.$$2swd 001388199 655_7 $$aAutobiographies.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01919894 001388199 655_0 $$aAutobiography. 001388199 655_4 $$aBiography. 001388199 655_7 $$aBiographies.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01919896 001388199 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001388199 655_7 $$aSources.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01423900 001388199 655_7 $$aAutobiographies.$$2lcgft 001388199 7001_ $$aDavis, Charles T.$$q(Charles Twitchell),$$d1918-1981,$$eeditor. 001388199 7001_ $$aGates, Henry Louis,$$cJr.,$$eeditor. 001388199 77608 $$iOnline version:$$tSlave's narrative.$$dOxford [Oxfordshire] ; New York : Oxford University Press, 1985$$w(OCoLC)559234708 001388199 852__ $$bgen$$hE444$$i.S575 1985 001388199 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1388199$$pGLOBAL_SET 001388199 980__ $$aBOOK 001388199 980__ $$aBIB
