The Bauhaus legacy. 001390233 5208_ $$a'Bauhaus Goes West' is a story of cultural exchange - between the Bauhaus emigres in the years following the school's closure in 1933 and the countries to which they moved, focusing in particular on Britain. Taking as its starting point the cultural connections between the UK and Germany in the early part of the 20th century, the book offers a timely re-evaluation of the school's influence on and relationship with modern art and design in Britain, concluding with the school's American legacy. 0Following the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933, teachers and students found new opportunities in Britain and the United States. Among them were Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, who simultaneously spent time in London before moving to America, an episode often overlooked but freshly explored here in the context of the interaction between German Modernism and British-based design reform from 1900. Other Bauhaus-trained artists - women as well as men - stayed in the UK and made important contributions into the 1960s. In America, Mies van der Rohe and Josef and Anni Albers had significant late careers, but, over time, the Bauhaus became a shorthand for Modernism's failure. Now, the centenary of the school's founding provides a key opportunity to reconsider how its values emerged and were contested both during its lifetime and beyond. 001390233 61020 $$aBauhaus$$xInfluence. 001390233 61020 $$aBauhaus$$xHistory. 001390233 61026 $$aBauhaus$$xHistoire.$$0(CaOONL)ncf12036620 001390233 61027 $$aBauhaus$$xInfluence.$$2cct 001390233 61027 $$aBauhaus$$xHistory.$$2cct 001390233 61027 $$aBauhaus.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00554499 001390233 650_0 $$aArt, British$$xGerman influences. 001390233 650_0 $$aArt, American$$xGerman influences. 001390233 650_6 $$aArt britannique$$0(CaQQLa)201-0001461$$xInfluence allemagne. 001390233 650_6 $$aArt américain$$0(CaQQLa)201-0001662$$xInfluence allemagne. 001390233 650_6 $$aArt américain$$0(CaQQLa)201-0001662$$xInfluence allemande.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0376376 001390233 650_7 $$aART$$xEuropean.$$2bisacsh 001390233 650_7 $$aArt, British$$xGerman influences.$$2cct 001390233 650_7 $$aArt, American$$xGerman influences.$$2cct 001390233 650_7 $$aART$$xEuropean.$$2cct 001390233 650_7 $$aArt and Design.$$2eflch 001390233 650_7 $$aArt, American$$xGerman influences.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00815903 001390233 650_7 $$aArt, British$$xGerman influences.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00816050 001390233 650_7 $$aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00972484 001390233 650_7 $$aBauhaus$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4130303-9 001390233 650_7 $$aExil$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4015959-0 001390233 650_7 $$aKünstler$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4033423-5 001390233 650_7 $$aRezeption$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4049716-1 001390233 650_7 $$aArt and Design.$$2ukslc 001390233 651_7 $$aGroßbritannien$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4022153-2 001390233 651_7 $$aUSA$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4078704-7 001390233 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001390233 852__ $$bgen$$hN 332 .G33$$iB4575 2019 001390233 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1390233$$pGLOBAL_SET 001390233 980__ $$aBOOK 001390233 980__ $$aBIB 001390233 994__ $$aC0$$bISE
