Although Republicans sometimes secured victory in presidential contests, a majority of Americans identified with the Democratic party, not the GOP. This book investigates how Republicans tackled the problem of their party's minority status and why their efforts to boost GOP fortunes usually ended in failure. At the heart of the Republicans' minority puzzle was the profound and persistent popularity of New Deal liberalism. This puzzle was stubbornly resistant to solution. Efforts to develop a Republican version of government activism met little success. The same was true of conservative strategies that stressed a more fundamental rejection of the Democrats' arguments. Technocratic initiatives to improve party organization and communications similarly failed to facilitate an electoral breakthrough. Only the Democratic party's decline eventually created opportunities for Republican resurgence. This book is the first to offer a wide-ranging analysis of the topic, which is of central importance to any understanding of modern U.S. political history"--$$cProvided by publisher. 001390239 61020 $$aRepublican Party (U.S. : 1854- )$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001390239 61027 $$aRepublican Party (U.S. : 1854- )$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00544975 001390239 61027 $$aRepublican Party$$gUSA$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)1119752388 001390239 61027 $$aRepublican Party (USA)$$2idszbz 001390239 648_7 $$a1900-1999$$2fast 001390239 650_7 $$aHISTORY$$zUnited States$$x20th Century.$$2bisacsh 001390239 650_7 $$aPolitics and government$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01919741 001390239 650_7 $$aPolitik.$$2idszbz 001390239 650_7 $$aKonservatism$$xhistoria$$zFörenta staterna.$$2sao 001390239 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xPolitics and government$$y20th century. 001390239 651_6 $$aÉtats-Unis$$xPolitique et gouvernement$$y20e siècle.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0052257 001390239 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001390239 651_7 $$aUSA.$$2idszbz 001390239 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001390239 852__ $$bgen$$hJK 2356$$i.M27 2012 001390239 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1390239$$pGLOBAL_SET 001390239 980__ $$aBIB 001390239 980__ $$aBOOK 001390239 994__ $$aC0$$bISE
