With an old paper bag and some rusty scissors, the whole family wades into the muck to collect as much of the muddy, snail-covered plant as they can. At first, it's embarrassing. Why can't her family get food at the grocery store? But when her mother shares the story of her family's life in China, the girl learns to appreciate the fresh food they foraged. Together, they make a new memory of watercress in this tender story inspired by the author's childhood memories and illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Jason Chin. - Jacket flap. 001390269 520__ $$aThis story is about the power of memory. Not just the beautiful memories, like the ones my mother and father had about eating watercress in China, but also the difficult ones, the memories that are sometimes too painful to share. It starts with my own distressing memory of being made to pick watercress that was growing wild by the side of the road. As the child of Chinese immigrants, growing up in a small, mostly white town in Ohio, I was very aware of how different my family and I were from everyone else. It's hard to feel like you don't belong, and collecting food from a muddy roadside ditch just made that bad feeling more intense for me -- something my very practical parents didn't understand. When I was young, my parents didn't talk about their memories of China, of growing up poor, losing siblings, and surviving war. I don't blame them -- these are difficult topics to discuss with children. But it's important, too, for children to understand their family history. Perhaps if I had known about the hardships they had faced, I would have been more compassionate as a child. Maybe I would have felt more empathy and less anger. More pride in my heritage and less shame. Memories have the power to inform, to inspire, and to heal. This story is both an apology and a love letter to my parents. It's also an encouragement to all children who feel different and to families with difficult pasts -- share your memories. Tell your stories. They are essential. - A note from the author. 001390269 520__ $$aEmbarrassed about gathering watercress from a roadside ditch, a girl learns to appreciate her Chinese heritage after learning why the plant is so important to her parents. 001390269 5211_ $$aAges: 4-8. 001390269 5212_ $$aGrades: PreK-3. 001390269 5218_ $$aLexile: AD610L. 001390269 586__ $$aRandolph Caldecott Medal, Winner, 2022 001390269 586__ $$aAsian/Pacific American Award for Literature, Picture Book, Winner, 2022 001390269 586__ $$aNewbery Medal, Honor, 2022 001390269 650_0 $$aWatercress$$vJuvenile fiction. 001390269 650_0 $$aHarvesting$$vJuvenile fiction. 001390269 650_0 $$aChinese Americans$$vJuvenile fiction. 001390269 650_0 $$aFamilies$$zOhio$$vJuvenile fiction. 001390269 650_1 $$aWatercress$$vFiction. 001390269 650_1 $$aHarvesting$$vFiction. 001390269 650_1 $$aChinese Americans$$vFiction. 001390269 650_1 $$aFamily life$$zOhio$$vFiction. 001390269 650_6 $$aCresson de fontaine$$0(CaQQLa)201-0074609$$vRomans, nouvelles, etc. pour la jeunesse.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0376960 001390269 650_6 $$aRécolte$$0(CaQQLa)201-0026588$$vRomans, nouvelles, etc. pour la jeunesse.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0376960 001390269 650_6 $$aAméricains d'origine chinoise$$0(CaQQLa)201-0062391$$vRomans, nouvelles, etc. pour la jeunesse.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0376960 001390269 650_6 $$aFamilles$$0(CaQQLa)201-0076848$$zOhio$$0(CaQQLa)201-0460841$$vRomans, nouvelles, etc. pour la jeunesse.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0376960 001390269 650_7 $$aJUVENILE FICTION / People & Places / United States / Asian American.$$2bisacsh 001390269 650_7 $$aJUVENILE FICTION / Social Themes / Emigration & Immigration.$$2bisacsh 001390269 650_7 $$aJUVENILE FICTION / Cooking & Food.$$2bisacsh 001390269 650_7 $$aChinese Americans.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00857249 001390269 650_7 $$aFamilies.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01728849 001390269 650_7 $$aHarvesting.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00951762 001390269 650_7 $$aWatercress.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01172614 001390269 650_7 $$aChinese Americans$$vFiction.$$2sears 001390269 650_7 $$aFamily life$$zOhio$$vFiction.$$2sears 001390269 650_7 $$aPicture books for children.$$2sears 001390269 650_7 $$aWatercress$$vFiction.$$2sears 001390269 651_0 $$aOhio$$vJuvenile fiction. 001390269 651_1 $$aOhio$$vFiction. 001390269 651_6 $$aOhio$$0(CaQQLa)201-0113923$$vRomans, nouvelles, etc. pour la jeunesse.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0376960 001390269 651_7 $$aOhio.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01205075 001390269 651_7 $$aOhio$$vFiction.$$2sears 001390269 655_0 $$aPicture books for children. 001390269 655_1 $$aPicture books. 001390269 655_2 $$aFictional Work$$0(DNLM)D022922 001390269 655_7 $$apicture books.$$2aat$$0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300026446 001390269 655_7 $$aFiction.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01423787 001390269 655_7 $$aJuvenile works.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411637 001390269 655_7 $$aPicture books.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01726789 001390269 655_7 $$aChildren's stories$$vPictorial works.$$2gsafd 001390269 655_7 $$aPicture books.$$2lcgft 001390269 655_7 $$aFiction.$$2lcgft 001390269 655_7 $$aLivres d'images.$$2rvmgf$$0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001578 001390269 655_7 $$aRomans.$$2rvmgf$$0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000475 001390269 7001_ $$aChin, Jason,$$d1978-$$eillustrator. 001390269 77608 $$iOnline version:$$aWang, Andrea.$$tWatercress.$$bFirst edition.$$dNew York : Holiday House, [2021]$$z9780823450541$$w(OCoLC)1243560991 001390269 852__ $$bcmc$$hPZ7.1.W3645$$iWat 2021 001390269 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1390269$$pGLOBAL_SET 001390269 980__ $$aBOOK 001390269 980__ $$aBIB
