Kieninger challenges the traditional Cold War narrative that détente prolonged the division of Europe and precipitated America's decline in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Rather, he argues that policymakers in the U.S. Department of State and in Western Europe envisaged the stability enabled by détente as a precondition for change, as Communist regimes saw a sense of security as a prerequisite for opening up their societies to Western influence over time. Kieninger identifies the Helsinki Accords, Lyndon Johnson's bridge building, and Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik as efforts aimed at constructive changes in Eastern Europe through a multiplication of contacts, communication, and cooperation on all societal levels. This study also illuminates the longevity of America's policy of peaceful change against the background of the nuclear stalemate and the military status quo"--Provided by publisher. 001393042 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001393042 61020 $$aConference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Organization)$$xHistory. 001393042 650_0 $$aDetente$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001393042 650_0 $$aCommunication in politics$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001393042 650_0 $$aCold War$$xDiplomatic history. 001393042 650_0 $$aNational security$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001393042 650_0 $$aNational security$$zEurope$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001393042 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$zEurope. 001393042 651_0 $$aEurope$$xForeign relations$$zUnited States. 001393042 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$y1963-1969. 001393042 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$y1969-1974. 001393042 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001393042 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aKieninger, Stephan.$$tDynamic détente : the United States and Europe, 1964-1975.$$dLanham : Lexington Books, [2016]$$z9781498532419 001393042 830_0 $$aHarvard Cold War studies book series. 001393042 852__ $$bebk 001393042 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete $$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=4428210$$zOnline Access 001393042 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1393042$$pGLOBAL_SET 001393042 980__ $$aBIB 001393042 980__ $$aEBOOK 001393042 982__ $$aEbook 001393042 983__ $$aOnline
