From the era of the Japanese Occupation to the White Horror and then to the lifting of martial law, the author shows how Hou Hsiao-hsien uses visual media to evoke the rhythms of daily life through the emotional memory of the characters and communities he explores. In particular, the book focuses on the ways in which Hou Hsiao-hsien seeks to reflect the strong dilemmas of identity and the traumatic emotions associated with witnessing history. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it investigates the concepts of daily life, representation and historical trauma in order to focus on how these films represent history and political trauma through the nature of daily life and personal memories, and the resulting historical responsibility and ethics. This is the first academic monography about Hou Hsiao-hsien's films.--$$cProvided by publisher. 001398200 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed October 17, 2018). 001398200 60010 $$aHou, Xiaoxian,$$d1947-$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001398200 650_0 $$aMotion pictures and history. 001398200 650_0 $$aTheater$$xPhilosophy. 001398200 650_0 $$aTheater and society. 001398200 650_6 $$aCinéma et histoire. 001398200 650_6 $$aThéâtre et société. 001398200 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001398200 852__ $$bebk 001398200 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-13-2170-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001398200 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1398200$$pGLOBAL_SET 001398200 980__ $$aBIB 001398200 980__ $$aEBOOK 001398200 982__ $$aEbook 001398200 983__ $$aOnline 001398200 994__ $$a92$$bISE
