It employs the concept of the chronotope, which refers to the phenomenon whereby the spatial and temporal frameworks explicit or implicit in a text have the same structure and uncovers various such chronotopes in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and in particular the tragedies of Aeschylus. Mikhail Bakhtin's pioneering use of the chronotope was in literary analysis. This study by contrast derives the variety of chronotopes manifest in Greek texts from the variety of socially integrative practices in the developing polis - notably reciprocity, collective ritual, and monetised exchange. In particular, the tragedies of Aeschylus embody the reassuring absorption of the new and threatening monetised chronotope into the traditional chronotope that arises from collective ritual with its aetiological myth"--$$cProvided by publisher. 001398317 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001398317 60000 $$aAeschylus$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001398317 650_0 $$aCosmology in literature. 001398317 650_0 $$aSpace and time in literature. 001398317 650_0 $$aSocial interaction in literature. 001398317 650_0 $$aMoney in literature. 001398317 650_0 $$aRitual in literature. 001398317 650_0 $$aGreek drama (Tragedy)$$xHistory and criticism. 001398317 650_0 $$aPhilosophy, Ancient. 001398317 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aSeaford, Richard.$$tCosmology and the polis.$$dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2012$$z9781107009271$$w(DLC) 2011041583$$w(OCoLC)753630544 001398317 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 001398317 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=833454$$zOnline Access 001398317 85641 $$3Table of contents only$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1201/2011041583-t.html 001398317 85642 $$3Publisher description$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1201/2011041583-d.html 001398317 85642 $$3Contributor biographical information$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1201/2011041583-b.html 001398317 85642 $$3Cover image$$uhttp://assets.cambridge.org/97811070/09271/cover/9781107009271.jpg 001398317 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:446019$$pGLOBAL_SET 001398317 980__ $$aEBOOK 001398317 980__ $$aBIB 001398317 982__ $$aEbook 001398317 983__ $$aOnline 001398317 994__ $$a92$$bISE
