Searching for a way to continue their radical politics and to proselytize among their fellow inmates, these men circulated messages of hope and engagement via primitive means and sympathetic prisoners. On odd bits of paper, in German and in English, they shared their thoughts and feelings in a handwritten clandestine magazine called "Prison Blossoms." This extraordinary series of essays on anarchism and revolutionary deeds, of prison portraits and narratives of homosexuality among inmates, and utopian poems and fables of a new world to come not only exposed the brutal conditions in American prisons, where punishment cells and starvation diets reigned, but expressed a continuing faith in the "beautiful ideal" of communal anarchism. 001399545 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001399545 61020 $$aState Penitentiary for the Western District of Pennsylvania. 001399545 650_0 $$aAnarchists$$zUnited States$$xHistory. 001399545 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$zPennsylvania$$vBiography. 001399545 7001_ $$aBauer, Henry,$$d1861-1934. 001399545 7001_ $$aNold, Carl,$$d1869-1934. 001399545 7001_ $$aBrody, Miriam,$$d1940- 001399545 7001_ $$aBuettner, Bonnie Cleo,$$d1943- 001399545 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aBerkman, Alexander, 1870-1936.$$tPrison blossoms.$$dCambridge, Mass. : Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2011$$z9780674050563$$w(DLC) 2010045391$$w(OCoLC)676725386 001399545 830_0 $$aJohn Harvard library. 001399545 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 001399545 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://site.ebrary.com/lib/usiricelib/Doc?id=10568040$$zOnline Access 001399545 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:450600$$pGLOBAL_SET 001399545 980__ $$aEBOOK 001399545 980__ $$aBIB 001399545 982__ $$aEbook 001399545 983__ $$aOnline
