Although major wars between sovereign states have become rare, contemporary world politics has been rife with internal conflict, ethnic cleansing, and violence against civilians. This book asks how, why, and when states and non-state actors use violence against one another, and examines the effectiveness of various forms of political violence. In the process of addressing these issues, the essays make two conceptual moves that illustrate the need to reconsider the way violence by states and non-state actors has typically been studied and understood. The first is to think of violence not as dichotomous, as either present or absent, but to consider the wide range of nonviolent and violent options available and ask why actors come to embrace particular strategies. The second is to explore the dynamic nature of violent conflicts, developing explanations that can account for the eruption of violence at particular moments in time. The arguments focus on how changes in the balance of power between and among states and non-state actors generate uncertainty and threat, thereby creating an environment conducive to violence. This innovative way of understanding violence deemphasizes the role of ethnic cleavages and nationalism in modern conflict."--Provided by publisher. 001404166 588__ $$aOCLC-licensed vendor bibliographic record. 001404166 650_0 $$aConflict management. 001404166 650_0 $$aEthnic conflict$$xPrevention. 001404166 650_0 $$aPolitical violence$$xPrevention. 001404166 650_0 $$aForced migration. 001404166 650_0 $$aWar$$xMoral and ethical aspects. 001404166 653__ $$aSOCIAL SCIENCES/Political Science/International Relations & Security 001404166 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001404166 7001_ $$aChenoweth, Erica,$$d1980-$$eeditor. 001404166 7001_ $$aLawrence, Adria,$$d1973-$$eeditor. 001404166 7001_ $$aKalyvas, Stathis N.,$$d1964-$$ewriter of foreword. 001404166 7102_ $$aBelfer Center for Science and International Affairs. 001404166 852__ $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 001404166 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=3339179$$zOnline Access 001404166 85642 $$3OCLC metadata license agreement$$uhttp://www.oclc.org/content/dam/oclc/forms/terms/vbrl-201703.pdf 001404166 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:426871$$pGLOBAL_SET 001404166 980__ $$aBIB 001404166 980__ $$aEBOOK 001404166 982__ $$aEbook 001404166 983__ $$aOnline
