They explain how such factors as neighborhood, family, peer group, and early schooling influence the academic performance of students from differing racial and ethnic origins and differing social classes." "Drawing on a major new source of data - the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen - the authors undertake a comprehensive analysis of the diverse pathways by which whites, African Americans, Latinos, and Asians enter American higher education. Theirs is the first study to document the different characteristics that students bring to campus and to trace out the influence of these differences on later academic performance. They show that black and Latino students do not enter college disadvantaged by a lack of self-esteem. In fact, overconfidence is more common than low self-confidence among some minority students. Despite this, minority students are adversely affected by racist stereotypes of intellectual inferiority. Although academic preparation is the strongest predictor of college performance, shortfalls in academic preparation are themselves largely a matter of socioeconomic disadvantage and racial segregation."--Jacket. 001408864 650_0 $$aCollege students$$zUnited States$$xSocial conditions. 001408864 650_0 $$aMinorities$$xEducation (Higher)$$zUnited States. 001408864 650_0 $$aAcademic achievement$$zUnited States. 001408864 650_0 $$aEducational equalization$$zUnited States. 001408864 650_6 $$aÉtudiants$$0(CaQQLa)201-0119196$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0119196$$xConditions sociales.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0377410 001408864 650_6 $$aMinorités$$0(CaQQLa)201-0096005$$xEnseignement supérieur$$0(CaQQLa)201-0096005$$zÉtats-Unis.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0407727 001408864 650_6 $$aSuccès scolaire$$0(CaQQLa)201-0010954$$zÉtats-Unis.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0407727 001408864 650_6 $$aDémocratisation de l'enseignement$$0(CaQQLa)201-0014742$$zÉtats-Unis.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0407727 001408864 650_7 $$aAcademic achievement.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00794949 001408864 650_7 $$aCollege students$$xSocial conditions.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00868048 001408864 650_7 $$aEducational equalization.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00903418 001408864 650_7 $$aMinorities$$xEducation (Higher)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01023138 001408864 650_7 $$aCollegestudent$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4315181-4 001408864 650_7 $$aSoziale Situation$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4077575-6 001408864 65017 $$aSociale herkomst.$$2gtt 001408864 65017 $$aEerstejaarsstudenten.$$2gtt 001408864 65017 $$aHoger onderwijs.$$2gtt 001408864 650_7 $$aCollege students$$zUnited States$$xSocial conditions.$$2nli 001408864 650_7 $$aMinorities$$xEducation (Higher)$$zUnited States.$$2nli 001408864 650_7 $$aAcademic achievement$$zUnited States.$$2nli 001408864 650_7 $$aEducational equalization$$zUnited States.$$2nli 001408864 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001408864 651_7 $$aUSA$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4078704-7 001408864 7001_ $$aMassey, Douglas S. 001408864 852__ $$bgen 001408864 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1408864$$pGLOBAL_SET 001408864 980__ $$aBIB 001408864 980__ $$aBOOK
