Despite an explosion of research from philosophers, psychologists, and scientists, attempts to explain consciousness in neurophysiological, or even cognitive, terms are often met with great resistance. In The Consciousness Paradox, Rocco Gennaro aims to solve an underlying paradox, namely, how it is possible to hold a number of seemingly inconsistent views, including higher-order thought (HOT) theory, conceptualism, infant and animal consciousness, concept acquisition, and what he calls the HOT-brain thesis. He defends and further develops a metapsychological reductive representational theory of consciousness and applies it to several importantly related problems. Gennaro proposes a version of the HOT theory of consciousness that he calls the "wide intrinsicality view" and shows why it is superior to various alternatives, such as self-representationalism and first-order representationalism. HOT theory says that what makes a mental state conscious is that a suitable higher-order thought is directed at that mental state. Thus Gennaro argues for an overall philosophical theory of consciousness while applying it to other significant issues not usually addressed in the philosophical literature on consciousness. Most cognitive science and empirical works on such topics as concepts and animal consciousness do not address central philosophical theories of consciousness. Gennaro's integration of empirical and philosophical concerns will make his argument of interest to both philosophers and nonphilosophers. -- Product Description from Website. 001408865 650_0 $$aConsciousness. 001408865 650_0 $$aConcepts. 001408865 650_0 $$aThought and thinking. 001408865 650_0 $$aCognition. 001408865 65012 $$aConsciousness$$0(DNLM)D003243 001408865 65022 $$aCognition$$0(DNLM)D003071 001408865 65022 $$aCognitive Science$$xmethods$$0(DNLM)D019336Q000379 001408865 650_2 $$aThinking$$0(DNLM)D013850 001408865 650_6 $$aConscience.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0002760 001408865 650_6 $$aConcepts.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0013458 001408865 650_6 $$aPensée.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0007476 001408865 650_6 $$aCognition.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0022586 001408865 650_7 $$athinking.$$2aat$$0(CStmoGRI)aat300264547 001408865 650_7 $$acognition.$$2aat$$0(CStmoGRI)aat300055149 001408865 650_7 $$aConcepts.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00872969 001408865 650_7 $$aConsciousness.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00875441 001408865 650_7 $$aThought and thinking.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01150249 001408865 650_7 $$aBewusstsein$$2gnd$$0(DE-601)106377876 001408865 650_7 $$aPhilosophy of Mind$$2gnd$$0(DE-601)104211431 001408865 650_7 $$aConsciousness.$$2nli 001408865 650_7 $$aConcepts.$$2nli 001408865 650_7 $$aThought and thinking.$$2nli 001408865 650_7 $$aMedvetandet.$$2sao 001408865 650_7 $$aMedvetandefilosofi.$$2sao 001408865 650_7 $$aTänkande.$$2sao 001408865 650_7 $$aBegreppsanalys.$$2sao 001408865 7761_ $$cElectronic resource $z 9780262299473 001408865 830_0 $$aRepresentation and mind. 001408865 852__ $$bgen$$hB808.9$$i.G46 2012 001408865 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1408865$$pGLOBAL_SET 001408865 980__ $$aBOOK 001408865 980__ $$aBIB
