Mellon Foundation. Universities and Their Leadership is a collection of original essays from presenters at the Princeton Conference on Higher Education. Individually, these essays discuss aspects of contemporary higher education in the U.S. Taken together, they offer a useful perspective on issues that face American universities as they enter the twenty-first century. The opening essay, "The University and Its Critics" by Frank Rhodes, confronts criticisms of the American university, examines how universities have changed over recent decades, and suggests a plan of action to restore public confidence and strengthen bonds of community within universities. "On the Accountability of Higher Education in the United States," by Martin Trow, deals with the critical issue of responsibility. Harold Shapiro's essay, "University Presidents--Then and Now," blends personal insights with a historical account of changes over time in the roles of university presidents. In commenting on Shapiro's paper, Hanna Gray draws on her experiences as a university president and her training as a historian to demonstrate that university presidents have always operated under constraints. Henry Rosovsky and Inge-Lise Ameer collaborate in the essay "A Neglected Topic: Professional Conduct of College and University Teachers," to which Amy Gutmann responds in an essay entitled "How Can Universities Teach Professional Ethics?" Oliver Fulton contributes a cross-cultural perspective in "Unity or Fragmentation, Convergence or Diversity: The Academic Profession in Comparative Perspective in the Era of Mass Higher Education." Daniel J. Kevles's essay, "A Time for Audacity: What the Past Has to Teach the Present about Science and the Federal Government," considers the historical partnership between the scientific community and the government. In reaction, Frank Press in "New Policies for New Times" comments on the shifting actions of major political parties in supporting research, and Maxine Singer, in her essay "On the Future of America's Scientific Enterprise," surveys opportunities and problems that have been created by recent scientific advances.--Amazon.com. 001408882 61027 $$aInstitut für Solarenergieforschung Hameln$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)5226104-9 001408882 650_0 $$aUniversities and colleges$$zUnited States$$xAdministration$$vCongresses. 001408882 650_0 $$aCollege presidents$$zUnited States$$vCongresses. 001408882 650_0 $$aUniversities and colleges$$zUnited States$$xFaculty$$vCongresses. 001408882 650_0 $$aScience$$xStudy and teaching (Higher)$$zUnited States$$vCongresses. 001408882 650_6 $$aUniversités$$0(CaQQLa)201-0279488$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0279488$$xAdministration$$0(CaQQLa)201-0377466$$vCongrès.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0378219 001408882 650_6 $$aPrésidents et recteurs d'université$$0(CaQQLa)201-0278337$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0278337$$vCongrès.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0378219 001408882 650_6 $$aUniversités$$0(CaQQLa)201-0279488$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0279488$$xCorps enseignant$$0(CaQQLa)201-0373802$$vCongrès.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0378219 001408882 650_6 $$aSciences$$0(CaQQLa)201-0005175$$xÉtude et enseignement (Supérieur)$$0(CaQQLa)201-0005175$$zÉtats-Unis$$0(CaQQLa)201-0407727$$vCongrès.$$0(CaQQLa)201-0378219 001408882 650_7 $$aCollege presidents.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00867876 001408882 650_7 $$aScience$$xStudy and teaching (Higher)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01108455 001408882 650_7 $$aUniversities and colleges$$xAdministration.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01161604 001408882 650_7 $$aUniversities and colleges$$xFaculty.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01161748 001408882 650_7 $$aFührung$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4018776-7 001408882 650_7 $$aKongress$$2gnd$$0(DE-588)4130470-6 001408882 65017 $$aUniversiteiten.$$2gtt 001408882 65017 $$aOnderwijsmanagement.$$2gtt 001408882 65007 $$aUniversität.$$2swd 001408882 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001408882 655_2 $$aCongress$$0(DNLM)D016423 001408882 655_4 $$aKongreß$$zPrinceton (NJ)$$y1996. 001408882 655_7 $$aConference papers and proceedings.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01423772 001408882 655_7 $$aConference papers and proceedings.$$2lcgft 001408882 655_7 $$aActes de congrès.$$2rvmgf$$0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001049 001408882 655_7 $$aPrinceton (NJ, 1996)$$2swd 001408882 7001_ $$aBowen, William G. 001408882 7001_ $$aShapiro, Harold T.,$$d1935- 001408882 7112_ $$aPrinceton Conference on Higher Education$$d(1996 :$$cPrinceton University) 001408882 852__ $$bgen$$hLB2341$$i.U567 1998 001408882 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1408882$$pGLOBAL_SET 001408882 980__ $$aBOOK 001408882 980__ $$aBIB
