He wanted to "see what the war had done to people, to the towns I might go through, to some jobs and crops, to stretches of landscape I loved and had seen at peace; and to let significance fall where it might." Working throughout the war, Cooke finished the manuscript as the atomic bomb was being dropped on Hiroshima. His publisher at the time thought there would be little interest in books on the war, and so it was stuffed in a closet for almost sixty years, until shortly before Cooke's death. Meanwhile, he had become one of the most widely read chroniclers of America, and his record of a lost country are captivating.--From publisher description 001416318 60010 $$aCooke, Alistair,$$d1908-2004$$xTravel$$zUnited States. 001416318 60017 $$aCooke, Alistair,$$d1908-2004.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00040662 001416318 647_7 $$aWorld War$$d(1939-1945)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01180924 001416318 648_7 $$a1918-1945$$2fast 001416318 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1939-1945$$zUnited States. 001416318 650_7 $$aManners and customs.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01007815 001416318 650_7 $$aSocial conditions$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01919811 001416318 650_7 $$aTravel.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01155558 001416318 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xSocial life and customs$$y1918-1945. 001416318 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xSocial conditions$$y1933-1945. 001416318 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xHistory$$y1933-1945. 001416318 651_7 $$aUnited States.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01204155 001416318 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001416318 852__ $$bgen$$hE169$$i.C7495 2007 001416318 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1416318$$pGLOBAL_SET 001416318 980__ $$aBOOK 001416318 980__ $$aBIB
