Despite the potential for furthering our understanding of communities more generally through exploring them in online contexts, online communities have not generally been a focus of community psychologists. A conceptual, state-of-the-art review of eight major community psychology journals revealed 23 descriptive or empirical articles concerning online communities have been published in the past 20 years. These articles are primarily descriptive and can be organized into four categories: community building and maintenance (seven articles, 30.43%), community support (six articles, 26.09%), norms and attitudes (six articles, 26.09%), and advocacy (four articles, 17.39%). These articles reflect a promising start to understanding how we can utilize the internet to build and enhance communities. They also indicate how much further we have to go, both in understanding online communities and certain concepts regarding community psychology more generally. Community psychologists involved in practice and applied settings specifically may benefit from understanding online communities as they become integral components of advocacy, community organizing, and everyday life. 001416657 6531_ $$aresearch topic: social sciences::psychology 001416657 6531_ $$aonline communities 001416657 6531_ $$aadvocacy 001416657 6531_ $$aattitudes 001416657 6531_ $$acommunity building 001416657 6531_ $$acommunity maintenance 001416657 6531_ $$acommunity psychology 001416657 6531_ $$acommunity supports 001416657 6531_ $$anorms 001416657 7001_ $$aSteltenpohl, Crystal N.$$uUniversity of Southern Indiana 001416657 773__ $$tGlobal Journal of Community Psychology Practice 001416657 8564_ $$yMain article$$938171fe4-05ff-4b50-8d02-17dd7cb8349c$$s1629609$$uhttps://library.usi.edu/record/1416657/files/TTF.pdf 001416657 904__ $$a2020-02-05T21:16:09Z$$baccessioned 001416657 904__ $$a2020-02-05T21:16:09Z$$bavailable 001416657 904__ $$a2020-02-05T21:16:10Z$$bdateFOA 001416657 904__ $$a2020-02-05$$bdateFirstOnline 001416657 905__ $$a/collection_2/6/dublin_core.xml 001416657 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1416657$$pGLOBAL_SET 001416657 980__ $$aMANUSCRIPT
