Volatile international oil markets and the acceleration of the energy transition has challenged the notion that oil revenues are sufficient to sustain oil economies in the near to medium term. But what is the meaning of economic sustainability? The book discusses the multiple dimensions of the concept: economic diversification, continuing value of resources, taxation and fiscal development, labor market sustainability, sustainable income distribution, environmental sustainability, political order (democracy or authoritarianism) and sustainability, regional integration. The overarching message in this book is that we should move on from the simplistic branding of the Gulf economies as unsustainable and tackle the details of which adaptations they might need to undertake. Giacomo Luciani teaches at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and at the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences Po in Paris. His edited book The Rentier State (1987, with H. Beblawi), is frequently cited as reference for the concept. His latest edited book, Combining Economic and Political Development (2017), discusses economic policies to support democratic transitions and is available in open access. Tom Moerenhout teaches at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and is a scholar at SIPA's Center on Global Energy Policy. He is involved as a practitioner on energy sector and structural reforms through his work as a consultant for the World Bank, International Institute for Sustainable Development and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, among others. 001430876 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on November 06, 2020). 001430876 650_0 $$aEnergy policy$$zMiddle East. 001430876 650_0 $$aPetroleum industry and trade$$xEnvironmental aspects$$zMiddle East. 001430876 650_0 $$aNatural resources$$zMiddle East. 001430876 650_0 $$aSustainable development$$zMiddle East. 001430876 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xEconomic conditions. 001430876 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xPolitics and government. 001430876 651_6 $$aMoyen-Orient$$xConditions économiques. 001430876 651_6 $$aMoyen-Orient$$xPolitique et gouvernement. 001430876 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001430876 7001_ $$aLuciani, Giacomo,$$d1948-$$eeditor. 001430876 7001_ $$aMoerenhout, Tom,$$eeditor. 001430876 77608 $$iPrint version :$$z9789811557279 001430876 830_0 $$aPolitical economy of the Middle East. 001430876 852__ $$bebk 001430876 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-15-5728-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.2 001430876 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1430876$$pGLOBAL_SET 001430876 980__ $$aBIB 001430876 980__ $$aEBOOK 001430876 982__ $$aEbook 001430876 983__ $$aOnline 001430876 994__ $$a92$$bISE
