In this study, I discuss the relations among these themes. Using Luhmann's social-systems theory for modelling meaning processing and Shannon's theory for information processing, I show that synergy can add new options to an innovation system as redundancy. The capacity to develop new options is more important for innovation than past performance. Entertaining a model of possible future states makes a knowledge-based system increasingly anticipatory. The trade-off between the incursion of future states on the historical developments can be measured using the Triple-Helix synergy indicator. This is shown, for example, for the Italian national and regional systems of innovation. 001430937 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed February 26, 2021). 001430937 650_0 $$aSociology$$xResearch. 001430937 650_0 $$aCommunication in learning and scholarship. 001430937 650_0 $$aInformation theory. 001430937 650_0 $$aTechnological innovations. 001430937 650_0 $$aSemantics. 001430937 650_1 $$aResearch Methodology.$$0https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22190 001430937 650_6 $$aCommunication savante. 001430937 650_6 $$aThéorie de l'information. 001430937 650_6 $$aInnovations. 001430937 650_6 $$aSémantique. 001430937 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001430937 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030599508 001430937 830_0 $$aQualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Scientific and Scholarly Communication,$$x2365-8371 001430937 852__ $$bebk 001430937 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-59951-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.2 001430937 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1430937$$pGLOBAL_SET 001430937 980__ $$aBIB 001430937 980__ $$aEBOOK 001430937 982__ $$aEbook 001430937 983__ $$aOnline 001430937 994__ $$a92$$bISE
