In 1964, Ruth Harrisons bestseller Animal Machines triggered a gear change in modern animal protection by popularising the term factory farming alongside a new way of thinking about animal welfare. Here, historian Claas Kirchhelle explores Harrisons avant-garde upbringing, Quakerism, and how animal welfare debates were linked to concerns about the wider ethical and environmental trajectories of post-war Britain. Breaking the myth of Harrison as a one-hit wonder, Kirchhelle reconstructs Harrisons 46 years of campaigning and the rapid transformation of welfare politics and science during this time. Exacerbated by Harrisons own actions, the decades after 1964 saw a polarisation of animal politics, a professionalisation of British activism, and the rise of a new animal welfare science. Harrisons belief in incremental reform allowed her to form ties to leading scientists but alienated her from more radical campaigners. Many of her 1964 demands gradually became part of mainstream politics. However, farm animal welfares increasing marketisation has also led to a relative divorce from the wider agenda of social improvement that Harrison once bore witness to. this is the first book to cast light on the interlinked and frequently uneasy histories of post-war British animal welfare activism, science, and legislation. Its unique scope allows it to go beyond limited existing accounts of modern British animal welfare and will be of interest to those interested in animal welfare, environmentalism, and the behavioural sciences. 001431041 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001431041 60010 $$aHarrison, Ruth,$$d1920-2000. 001431041 650_0 $$aAnimal rights activists$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001431041 650_0 $$aAnimal welfare$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001431041 650_6 $$aDéfenseurs des droits des animaux$$zGrande-Bretagne$$xHistoire$$y20e siècle. 001431041 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001431041 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001431041 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aKIRCHHELLE, CLAAS.$$tBEARING WITNESS.$$d[Place of publication not identified] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2021$$z3030627918$$w(OCoLC)1198715293 001431041 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in the history of social movements. 001431041 852__ $$bebk 001431041 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-62792-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.2 001431041 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1431041$$pGLOBAL_SET 001431041 980__ $$aBIB 001431041 980__ $$aEBOOK 001431041 982__ $$aEbook 001431041 983__ $$aOnline 001431041 994__ $$a92$$bISE
