Whether or not a state pursues a European and democratic agenda depends on domestic lawmakers. Further, political elites are pre-eminent in deciding on the nature, form and content of any law, and on the extent to which the rule of law is actually enforced. Elites can overcome structural or institutional barriers that stand in the way of achieving their goals. The empirical study on Romania presented here lends this observation a more profound meaning: it shows how, in contexts where high level corruption is the norm rather than the exception, self-serving political elites cannot be expected to genuinely commit to adopting sound anti-corruption reform. The book is an inquiry into the motivations that drive legislators to make particular decisions, but also into the structural characteristics and dynamics of the elite that invite a selfish rather than responsible and responsive behaviour. 001431539 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed October 3, 2022). 001431539 61020 $$aEuropean Union$$xMembership. 001431539 650_0 $$aPolitical corruption$$zRomania. 001431539 650_0 $$aElite (Social sciences)$$zRomania. 001431539 651_0 $$aRomania$$xPolitics and government$$y1989- 001431539 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001431539 830_0 $$aContributions to political science.$$x2198-7297 001431539 852__ $$bebk 001431539 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-11081-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.2 001431539 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1431539$$pGLOBAL_SET 001431539 980__ $$aBIB 001431539 980__ $$aEBOOK 001431539 982__ $$aEbook 001431539 983__ $$aOnline 001431539 994__ $$a92$$bISE
