It aims to explain causal relationships between corruption and differences in political and socio-economic dimensions within these different countries over the period 1999-2010. The countries are grouped together into three sub-regions (the Gulf region, North Africa, and Mashreq plus Yemen). The author finds that the main variables that showed robustness in impacting the intensity of corruption are the rule of law, quality of regulations, and trade openness. Poverty rates and income inequality have been clear triggers for petty corruption. Meanwhile, natural resources endowments have shown less of an impact on the levels of corruption, and similarly women's empowerment has not been found to be a strong indicator"--$$cProvided by publisher 001432300 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed February 1, 2021). 001432300 650_0 $$aPolitical corruption$$zMiddle East. 001432300 650_0 $$aPolitical corruption$$zAfrica, North. 001432300 650_6 $$aCorruption (Politique)$$zAfrique du Nord. 001432300 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xPolitics and government. 001432300 651_0 $$aAfrica, North$$xPolitics and government. 001432300 651_6 $$aMoyen-Orient$$xPolitique et gouvernement. 001432300 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001432300 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030553135 001432300 830_0 $$aPolitical corruption and governance series. 001432300 852__ $$bebk 001432300 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-55314-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001432300 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1432300$$pGLOBAL_SET 001432300 980__ $$aBIB 001432300 980__ $$aEBOOK 001432300 982__ $$aEbook 001432300 983__ $$aOnline 001432300 994__ $$a92$$bISE
