It addresses the principles of their transport, uptake and metabolism and reviews methodologies for their analytical determination. It also discusses ecotoxicological effects arising from their presence and highlights bioremediation approaches for their removal. The use of treated wastewater to irrigate crops is becoming more widespread in regions where freshwater is limited. This practice conserves freshwater resources and contributes to nutrient recycling. However, concerns remain regarding the safety of irrigation with treated wastewater since it contains residues of pharmaceuticals that have survived treatment, which means that soil and fauna are potentially exposed to these xenobiotics. Various pathways govern the fate of pharmaceuticals in crop-soil systems, including soil degradation; formation of non-extractable residues; uptake by soil-dwelling organisms (e.g. earthworms); and uptake, transport, and metabolism in agricultural crops. Investigations into these aspects have only recently been initiated, and there is still a long way to go before a meaningful assessment of the impact of wastewater has been completed. 001434292 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed March 10, 2021). 001434292 650_0 $$aSoil pollution. 001434292 650_0 $$aSoil remediation. 001434292 650_0 $$aSewage$$xPurification. 001434292 650_0 $$aSewage irrigation$$xEnvironmental aspects. 001434292 650_0 $$aWater in agriculture. 001434292 650_6 $$aSols$$xPollution. 001434292 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001434292 7001_ $$aPérez Solsona, Sandra,$$eeditor.$$1https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3179-3969 001434292 7001_ $$aMontemurro, Nicola,$$eeditor$$1https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7496-203X 001434292 7001_ $$aChiron, Serge,$$eeditor$$1https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7726-1079 001434292 7001_ $$aBarceló, Damià,$$eeditor.$$1https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8873-0491 001434292 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030612894 001434292 830_0 $$aHandbook of environmental chemistry ;$$vv. 103.$$x1867-979X 001434292 852__ $$bebk 001434292 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-61290-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001434292 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1434292$$pGLOBAL_SET 001434292 980__ $$aBIB 001434292 980__ $$aEBOOK 001434292 982__ $$aEbook 001434292 983__ $$aOnline 001434292 994__ $$a92$$bISE
