It explores the possibilities and limitations the genre held for the self-expression of a writer at a time which considerably pre-dated the Romantic cult of the individual self. The book analyzes the connections between genre and self-articulation: How could the diary come to be associated with emotional self-expression given the tedium and repetitiveness of its early seventeenth-century ancestors? How did what were once mere lists of daily events evolve into narrative representations of inner emotions? What did it mean to write on a daily basis, when the proper use of time was a heavily contested issue? Reading the Early Modern Diary addresses these questions and develops new theoretical frameworks for discussing interiority and affect in early modern autobiographical texts. 001435001 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from digital title page (viewed on March 31, 2021). 001435001 650_0 $$aEnglish diaries$$yEarly modern, 1500-1700$$xHistory and criticism. 001435001 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001435001 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001435001 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aNandi, Miriam.$$tReading the early modern English diary.$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan, [2021]$$z3030423263$$w(OCoLC)1138548980 001435001 852__ $$bebk 001435001 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-42327-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001435001 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1435001$$pGLOBAL_SET 001435001 980__ $$aBIB 001435001 980__ $$aEBOOK 001435001 982__ $$aEbook 001435001 983__ $$aOnline 001435001 994__ $$a92$$bISE
