Specific examples of successful approaches are given as well as detailed plans for how to engage these students. Pitfalls as well as success are described. In addition this work provides a detailed description of how to develop the students into a cohort that exhibits comradery. Three types of cohort form, those within the freshman class, those among the upperclassmen and those between the freshmen and upperclassmen. The program works because the social reality is that the peer mentor has a better repertoire with the first semester freshmen than the faculty or staff and assists with student success. Factors such as financial aid, policy, and support systems influence student success. In the sciences, students often struggle with the content and adjusting to the college experience. Research states that a mentorship program supports retention as well as enhances the student experience during college. This program creates a cohort group among the upperclassmen mentors and freshmen and provides leadership development for all involved. 001435333 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed April 13, 2021). 001435333 650_0 $$aCollege dropouts$$xPrevention. 001435333 650_0 $$aMentoring in education. 001435333 650_0 $$aScience$$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 001435333 650_0 $$aTechnology$$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 001435333 650_0 $$aEngineering$$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 001435333 650_0 $$aMathematics$$xStudy and teaching (Higher) 001435333 650_0 $$aScience$$xStudy and teaching. 001435333 650_0 $$aEducation, Higher. 001435333 650_0 $$aProfessional education. 001435333 650_0 $$aVocational education. 001435333 650_6 $$aMentorat en éducation. 001435333 650_6 $$aSciences$$xÉtude et enseignement (Supérieur) 001435333 650_6 $$aSciences$$xÉtude et enseignement. 001435333 650_6 $$aEnseignement supérieur. 001435333 650_6 $$aEnseignement professionnel. 001435333 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001435333 7001_ $$aCapco, David G.$$q(David George),$$eauthor. 001435333 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030658632 001435333 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030658649 001435333 852__ $$bebk 001435333 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-65865-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001435333 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1435333$$pGLOBAL_SET 001435333 980__ $$aBIB 001435333 980__ $$aEBOOK 001435333 982__ $$aEbook 001435333 983__ $$aOnline 001435333 994__ $$a92$$bISE
