Using the notoriously false reporting of EU policies by the British press as a starting point, it utilises Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the linguistic properties of false news stories and to understand how they function as myth in Roland Barthes sense. The disinformation is essential for the impact these news stories had as it provides the simplification which creates the blissful clarity of myth that Barthes described. As myth, the false news stories depoliticised a political argument and naturalised the claim of antagonistic British-European relations. Henkel shows how news stories used disinformation to articulate a Eurosceptic myth of the feisty, witty Briton who stands up against the European bully. Her main argument is that the disinformation contributed to the Brexit vote because, as myth, it transported an ideology. Henkel argues that the Brexit debate and the news reporting that preceded it for decades can be understood as a case study for how political journalism becomes democratically dysfunctional. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of journalism, media and culture, political communication, and Critical Discourse Analysis. Imke Henkel is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Lincoln, UK. She is a former political journalist who wrote for top German national newspapers including Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit, as well as being the UK and Ireland correspondent for the German news magazine Focus for ten years. Her research focuses, among other topics, on how the British media report European issues. 001435872 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (ProQuest Ebook Central, viewed October 29, 2021). 001435872 61020 $$aEuropean Union$$xPress coverage$$zGreat Britain. 001435872 650_0 $$aPropaganda$$zGreat Britain. 001435872 650_0 $$aDisinformation$$zGreat Britain. 001435872 650_0 $$aJournalism$$xObjectivity$$zGreat Britain. 001435872 650_6 $$aPropagande$$zGrande-Bretagne. 001435872 650_6 $$aDésinformation$$zGrande-Bretagne. 001435872 650_6 $$aPresse$$xObjectivité$$zGrande-Bretagne. 001435872 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001435872 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHenkel, Imke.$$tDestructive storytelling.$$dCham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, [2021]$$z9783030695026$$w(OCoLC)1242745933 001435872 852__ $$bebk 001435872 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-69503-3$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001435872 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1435872$$pGLOBAL_SET 001435872 980__ $$aBIB 001435872 980__ $$aEBOOK 001435872 982__ $$aEbook 001435872 983__ $$aOnline 001435872 994__ $$a92$$bISE
